Chapter Eighteen

Bryn

My grandmother has gone off the deep end.

I don’t mean to suggest the woman was ever normal, but her fame-whoring has reached a new low. Rory doesn’t have the first clue of what could have happened tonight. Nana wanted a twenty-seven-course dinner, like she read about in a review of a Michelin-star restaurant in Italy. (It was a bad review, like catastrophically bad, but leave it to Nana to pick and choose what she takes away from something.) I countered by saying three courses were perfectly acceptable, to which she responded that I was small-minded for settling for “acceptable” when the man we were setting up was a billionaire, for God’s sake. An hour of bickering later, we settled on seven courses. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg . . .

He’d know if you told him, Bryn. You fucked up too.

But it felt like such a slippery slope. I knew if I talked to him, I’d want to see him, and if I asked him to have someone covertly drop him off at my house, so as to avoid the whole lovely but gossiping neighbor scenario, I would jump him the second he closed the door behind him. I might not even wait. Why not give Miss Betty the thrill of her life?

But I didn’t want that to happen. It’s wrong, for one thing. Even though I’m not matchmaking these women, I’m allowing my grandmother to do it despite knowing Rory isn’t open to love. And sure, no one “allows” Nana to do anything, but I could figure out some way to stop her. Hell, I’m pretty sure she wouldn’t know how to turn the internet back on even if I just disconnected the router.

Let’s be honest, the ethics of matchmaking aren’t really the lynchpin in this situation. The bigger problem is that I’m still struggling to believe a man who could have any woman he wants would choose me, Bryn Mayberry, Bitch Woman herself, and accompanying him on his dates is hammering that home in unpleasant ways.

Of course, this date wasn’t much of a date at all. Rory looks pissed enough to melt that iceberg, and I can’t blame him. When Tina said she thought Nana would strike out, she’d been dead on. Only someone on drugs would think Lanie is an appropriate match for Rory. Sure, she looks the part, and there was a sinking sensation in my stomach as she walked out in that red dress, so much sexier than the plain black one I have on, but she’s all wrong for him. For one thing, she’s the kind of woman who’d marry a man without knowing anything about him beyond what he looks like and how much is in his bank account. Oh, and his star sign. Then there’s the fact that she’s obviously the kind of person whose ideal life would include jet-setting and instagramming said jet-setting. Rory isn’t. He would save his grandmother’s sweater from a raging fire. He doesn’t want to spend every night dressed to the nines, eating strangely shaped food on tiny plates.
